Tips from Previous Visitors

  1. In your carry on luggage include a change of clothes and any essential personal items
  2. Bring several retractable pens-there is always a shortage
  3. Swiss Army Knife with bottle opener and scissors should be packed in checked baggage
  4. Bring your own stethoscope, otoscope and a durable flashlight
  5. Let those at home know that you have arrived safely by phone or email
  6. Keep a journal
  7. Pack cotton clothes or polypropylene clothing (REI) designed for tropical weather. Polypro is best for quick drying in humid climates
  8. Bring several books for light reading and leave them for others
  9. Bring multiple small bottles of hand sanitizer and tissues
  10. Start taking photos as soon as you arrive. Always ask permission when photographing children
  11. Carry of letter of donation if you are bringing medical supplies or unexpired pharmaceuticals into the country
  12. Good traction shoes or sandals work best if you are coming during the rainy season- May to September.
  13. Consider rechargeable batteries with charger.
  14. For plane travel include chapstick, ear plugs, and eye mask.
  15. Give your family a copy of your passport and the health and evacuation insurance form
